Looking at the artist Johnny Briggs

The artist Johnny Briggs came and gave a lecture about his work in my university, Wales Trinity Saint Davids Swansea. unfortunatly due to personal problems I was unable to attend, So I decided to do some research on him and his work.

of the indentation of a full stop on my late Grandmother’s note pad”. Although the image is very simplistic, in my opinion, it is a very beautiful image that documents a life gone by.

grandmothers fullstop

I find the clarity of the paper fibres incredible to look at, particularly in the area of the full stop. I also thought this image brought with it quite a sad atmosphere when read with it’s caption.

I noticed in the majority of Briggs’ work that he likes to play with and alter reality like in the image below. In a way there is something quite unsettling about this image, it almost seems like a still from a horror movie. All the small details such as the man wearing the suit, his head and arms facing the wrong way seem to contrast against it’s surroundings due to how ordinary it is.

Again, similarly to a lot of Brigg’s work the piece seems to give the idea of having some form of sentimental value. The fact that the young child dressed as an angel has been cut out and folded over implies to the viewer that something has happened to the girl, likely to be death, the fact the child is dressed as an angel enhances this idea I found and creates a feeling that this is a precious piece of work.

“Manhattan”

I have always been interested in taking images of cityscapes, I find a variety of images, movies, paintings etc have influenced my work. The link above is a video of the opening scene of “Manhatten” a Woody Allen movie, there are sections of this video that have strongly inspired me or gave me ideas.

Below is a selection of my own work taken over the last couple of years.

A review of two site specific exhibitions created by second year student at University of Wales Trinity Saint David Swansea.

A review of two site specific exhibitions created by second year student at University of Wales Trinity Saint David Swansea.

The first exhibition I visited was on the top floor of the book shop Waterstones positioned in the middle of Swansea city. Having seen the posters for this exhibition titled, “Ignorance is Strength… inspiration from George Orwell’s 1984, BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOUI wasn’t entirely certain what to expect as I am unfamiliar with this book and although I have grasped the concept of Big Brother over the years it has been televised I have never actually watched the show.20131125-041420-pm.jpg

On entering the exhibition I was offered a tour around all of the installation pieces to explain more about what they meant. From what information I gathered the exhibition was really about creating awareness of the fact that we, as an individual, are always being watched in our day to day life, through social networks, cctv cameras etc and strangely we are either unaware or comfortable with the fact we are being watched. The first installation I viewed seemed to be about showing the viewer that through social networks such as twitter, facebook or anything we do online is being watched. The artist displayed this idea by having a cluster of varied electric screens together with eyes jumping back and forth on different screens looking back at the audience. As a viewer I found this piece made me feel uneasy partly due to realisation of the fact how much I am being watched but also because it was an unnerving display to stand in front of and witness.

20131125-040838-pm.jpg  The next piece I found interesting I found when walking through the exhibition space and came across a note on the floor that read “We are the dead” I saw this note was one of many which led the audience to a large pile of folded up images. I was told I was allowed to “rummage” through these images to see what they were of. On closer examination I found that these images were CCTV-like images taken from above of people walking along the streets of Swansea in various areas. To me this seemed like an invasion of privacy however, for this purpose I understand why it was done. But still seeing these images and being able to actually interact with the installation gave me an unusual disconcerting feeling, because as I looked through the images that I thought was an invasion of privacy a realisation dawned on me that this installation turned its audience into the “watchers” which I think emphasises the idea of always being watched even if it by the people surrounding us not just through cameras and online.

20131125-041021-pm.jpg 20131125-041046-pm.jpg

Another installation piece I found particularly interesting in this exhibition was, although simple, I feel was quite effective for the message these artists were trying to convey. On entering the room the audience sees a large curved window looking down onto one of the main streets of Swansea town, and at first that’s all it appears to be however, when standing in the centre of the window there are two speakers either side of the window which are constantly letting out snippets of conversations which the viewer has to concentrate to hear. The idea behind this is that the 20131125-040933-pm.jpgviewer stands at the large window watching the people below thinking they can hear parts of their conversation. Although very simple I thought this was a clever idea and a good use of the room’s space.

Another of the site specific exhibitions I went to view was located in High Street Arcade titled “Er Cof”. On entering this small arcade, again not really sure what to expect, I came across a small room installation which the audience viewed through its windows. At first the installation seemed slightly out of place as I did not know any of the background of this small area however, after speaking to one of the artists that helped create this small piece it put the idea and installation into better context. I found the small space interesting to view and now knowing that that specific area was where the last bomb fell in Swansea during the Second World War into a book shop, the pages covering the walls with slightly burnt edges and clustered in the centre made slightly more sense to me personally.

20131125-073230-pm.jpg 20131125-073241-pm.jpg 20131125-073212-pm.jpg

And although this was an interesting piece to look at I found it slightly visually uninteresting simply because it had limited tones within the piece itself which, for me, almost made the centre piece of flying pages and burning paper blend together with the background rather than stand out and have the impact a bomb going off would have, there was very little excitement I found.

In comparison to each other these two exhibitions were both interesting however, I found the more conceptually and visually interesting space and work to be “Ignorance is Strength”. This was because I thought the idea and message behind it was very relevant in today’s society and the number of installations in that one room explored a variety of ways in which we are being watched and may not be aware of it. I also liked how some of the pieces involved the audience by being able to look through the “CCTV” images on the floor or even something as simple as standing, watching and listening to the sounds they were providing. Although I found “Er Cof” exhibition interesting and liked how they linked the areas history into their work I thought it was too small and not even to grab the audiences attention for very long due to the exhibition being in that one small space. Had there been other pieces that linked with this project I feel it would have had the ability to capture the viewers attention and for much longer making them want to understand the piece more.

(The images shown in this review are pictures taken of the work in the exhibitions by various artists)

Found the lighting interesting on my walk back to my room yesterday, possibly due to having such dark clouds contrasting with the warm lighting on the building as well as the rainbow next to it.

My dream response

I was very pleased with the out come of these images and thought they looked effective, especially when printed A3 and placed side by side in a straight line. I decided on displaying the images in a line as part if my inspiration came from the title of the dream “reoccurring dream” so I wanted them to seem like that’s what they were. When showing my work to the rest of my visual studies class I was happy to hear that the majority of them had positive feed back.

The Dream Project

The Dream project

In a visual studies session the whole class was asked to write down a recent dream, these dreams were then put in a box and we chose a dream at random. We were not supposed to share this dream with anyone and keep it to ourselves. We were given a two week deadline to come out with a visual response to this dream, whether it be literal or metaphorical.

I was told not to put up the text of the dream I recieved as this was a purely visual project. however, after reading through the dream carefully I began my work process by picking out words and phrases the stuck out to me or found interesting these were:

  • Reoccurring
  • “the route is different each time”
  • Flowers
  • Graves
  • “I don’t recognise any of the names”

The first word I noticed (reoccurring) I found interesting as I tend to find when I have similar dreams myself they tend to merge together and I find it difficult sometimes to tell certain details apart from each dream.

I also found it interesting how the writer talks about walking through the cemetery and not recognising any of the names. Through reading this I decided to take a walk and explore Maesteg cemetery looking at all the old and fresh graves, reading the different names which made me think of how each grave is supposed to represent that person, but how hard it was to make a connection with the name and the grave to the faceless person occupying it. I began thinking about this idea of being faceless, that nobody will really ever know who you are again.

This idea stuck in my head and began researching it by simply typing the word “faceless” into the Google search to see what I could find. There was a certain type of image I connected with as I thought of my task at hand. These were:

20131113-082753-pm.jpg (Image to the left from: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=man+ray&hl=en-B307GB328&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=Jc6DUpjALIqrhQfYhYDIDg&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1280&bih=626&dpr=1#hl=en-GB&q=faceless&tbm=isch&facrc=_&imgdii=AR1r8SmTR2EFHM%3A%3BG9hFWiOxshHOIM%3BAR1r8SmTR2EFHM%3A&imgrc=AR1r8SmTR2EFHM%3A%3BZkuLNPzsX2BP8M%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fmetalifestream.com%252Fwordpress-content%252Fuploads%252F2010%252F08%252FFaceless-Flickr-Anna-Hendy-all-rights-reserved-4346831113_3bc1f9673c_b.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fmetalifestream.com%252Fwordpress%252F%253Fattachment_id%253D2887%3B1024%3B877)

I liked that rather than being simply a person without a face, the rags/cloth were being used to hide the face, quite like what a grave does, hides it’s occupant. I was inspired through this to take images, rather than just being the face I wanted to have a whole person being hidden. So I had two people model for me wearing car wax rags. As I thought this dream had more of a creepy quality, I had the models try and distort their bodies in images as well as having some more natural poses.

20131113-082449-pm.jpg  20131113-082428-pm.jpg

Having read that in each reoccurring dream this person takes a different route to the cemetery each time, which they do not recognise. I quite liked the idea of incorporating this into my images somehow and was reminded by certain images by Heinz Hajek-Halke:

20131113-082613-pm.jpg  20131113-082854-pm.jpg

(Both images above from: http://avg.nation.com/avgtbavg/search/images?cid=%7B13F2E4CE-7EDC-450C-9CED-332DC4083EBD%7D&mid=ca04513fbd380eb8e9cb87fa4c74491d-4875006c8e44c0dcb05fb6fde09d5e7c4971b97b&ds=AVG&lang=en&v=17.0.1.7&pid=nation&pr=fr&d=2013-09-29%2021%3A19%3A12&sap=hp&coid=avgtbavg&q=heinz%20hajek-halke&fcoid=408&fcop=topnav&fpid=2 )

Although these images do not actually show any paths or passage ways, there are certain elements and shapes that remind me of going through tunnels or narrow pathways. Through looking at these images I find it interesting how Halke incorporated all of the different elements into one singular image and would like to experiment with this idea possibly through the use of photoshop rather than double exposures as I believe for this purpose my images will turn out looking more effective and hopefully I will have more control over what they look like. However I still went out in an attempt to find curving pathways to take images of as the dream reads “winding roads” and will hopefully be able to incorporate these images into my final ideas.

20131113-082506-pm.jpg  20131113-082810-pm.jpg

At the same time as this I began looking at grave flowers and how most of them looked pretty weathered and dead and decided in these images I wanted the flowers to stand out and stick in the viewers head as if the life of the fresh flowers was symbolic of that person somehow or possibly the life that used to be there. I began looking through Georgia O’Keefe’s paintings of flowers as I remember them being so vibrant and almost seemed alive.

20131113-082537-pm.jpg  20131113-082603-pm.jpg

( Both images above are from: http://avg.nation.com/avgtbavg/search/images?cid=%7B13F2E4CE-7EDC-450C-9CED-332DC4083EBD%7D&mid=ca04513fbd380eb8e9cb87fa4c74491d-4875006c8e44c0dcb05fb6fde09d5e7c4971b97b&ds=AVG&lang=en&v=17.0.1.7&pid=nation&pr=fr&d=2013-09-29%2021%3A19%3A12&sap=hp&coid=avgtbavg&q=Georgia%20O%20Keefe%20Flowers&fcoid=302357&fcop=results-main&fpid=2&qlnk=True)

I don’t want to display the images as close-ups because I don’t want them to seem too abstract to the viewer if I am later manipulating the images and incorporating other objects. So I decided I will take these images of flowers almost head on, displaying the whole of it. Like Georgia O’Keefe’s work I hope to try and keep as much colour in the flowers as possible.

20131113-082338-pm.jpg  20131113-082318-pm.jpg

My final images are to follow as I wish to display them to my class first to receive feedback, also so I can upload images of what it looks like on display.

Dreams

20131107-121433 pm.jpg

After discussing dreams as a group, I immediately thought of Man Ray and his work as his images possess a surreal quality in which I admire. The image above of Dora Maar (1936) by Man Ray gives me the feeling as if the woman is trapped, the fact there are two of the same woman visible almost gives the illusion of her moving around rapidly. This image reminded me of one of my own images taken not long ago showing a girl spinning so quickly details of her body, clothes, facial expression is lost completely.
